Day 5 July 13, 2017
Camp began with me not wanting to wake up because I was so tired. We have the option to not go to breakfast, but I know that all I do is complain when I'm hungry, so I knew I'd have to eat. After breakfast, I attended the Social Media Analytics session where I officially became scared of posting anything on social media. Dr. Utku Pamuksuz of the College of Business discussed key ways to use social media to maximize potential career success and explained the differences between the Big Five Personality Traits (extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness to experience, emotional stability) and the Big Five Brand Personality Traits on social media (sincerity, excitement, competence, sophistication, ruggedness).
Next was a session called The Pitch. It was taught by Steve Hall who discussed advertising and its effect on different people. He explained that advertising is grounded in ideas and that we should be "students of life" and learn as much as we can about everything. We watched a few commercials, each seeming to be targeted at a different audience and bringing a variety of emotions to its viewers.
The last session of the morning was about mixed reality where Mike Yao explained that mixed reality was the in between area of real environment, augmented reality, augmented virtuality and virtual environment. I didn't understand what all of these terms meant at first, but Mr. Yao went into detail about virtual reality and its effect on people. Products have been developed recently that allow people to enter a virtual world by attaching their smartphone to a certain headset and there has been numerous research on the topic. In the afternoon we did an augmented reality exercise where we explored Gregory Hall and found auras.
My quote of the day is from Mike Rowe - "I'm looking forward to the future and feeling grateful for the the past." Today is the last full day of camp and I leave tomorrow. I'm so grateful for everything I have experienced this week; the people I've met, the sessions I've attended, and the faculty who have inspired me to pursue a career in media have truly impacted my life greatly.
I will miss everyone here! Maybe I'll be back for college?
