Day 1 July 9, 2017
The first day of a camp is always a struggle, especially when you take it upon yourself to bring six bags. Ready to lug my suitcase up flights of steps, I walked into Nugent Hall to discover that by some miracle, I was on the first floor. Clasping my hands together in joy, I hurried back to my car to see that my mother had hauled all of bags out of the trunk, demanding that I take them to my room alone while she parked. So, being the responsible 17 year-old that I am, I brought in about half of my luggage to check in to my room. Although I was one of the first people to arrive, a small complication involving the fact that I didn't know how to swipe my hall card prevented me from getting in line before the crowd swooped in to get my folder and itinerary for the week.
After meeting my roommate Kate, who shared my lack of ability to successfully use dorm keys, I unpacked and headed to the common area of Nugent Hall. Led by Associate Dean Julian Parrott, our group walked through construction zones and "Do Not Enter" signs to maneuver ourselves towards David Kinley Hall. We were introduced to the camp and given tips on how to brand ourselves and be professional.

Bribed with unlimited popcorn, we set out in groups for a scavenger hunt, going to four different buildings and taking pictures in front of them. I was very confused because every building looked the same and sincerely hoped that I would not get lost this week. Then we headed to dinner, which made me realize that the buffet will make the freshman 50, *ahem* I mean 15, very easy to accomplish in college.
When we headed to the Recreation Center, we thought for some reason we were going to watch a movie. Instead, we were steered into the bowling alley- best camp ever! My new friends got to see just how terrible I am at bowling, frequently rolling the ball into the gutter and losing the game by several points. However, I had so much fun cheering on my considerably more talented bowler friends!
Today was such a wonderful experience. Although starting at a new camp with new people can be overwhelming, I can already tell this week will fly by and soon I'll be wishing I was back here.
My quote of the day is from Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” No one from my school has ever gone to this camp and few are interested in journalism. I hope that the experience I have this week will allow me to bring back information to share with my school and encourage more students to pursue journalism and attend this camp. Even though some people may not be interested in journalism per se, many of them enjoy sports or entertainment and would enjoy attending a camp like this.
